Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi stated on Wednesday that the constitution would not be amended, in response to rumours and a disinformation campaign that he claims are intended to stir up unrest and destabilize the country.
“Egypt has a constitution approved by its people, and no one will touch it,” the Egyptian head of state declared during the 44th Armed Forces cultural symposium, held to mark the 53rd anniversary of the victory in the October War.
Al-Sisi warned against attempts to manipulate public opinion. He argued that the rumours, efforts to distort public perception, and attempts to incite the public – observed in recent months – are aimed at undermining the country’s stability.
These remarks come amid speculation circulating on social media that the Cconstitution might be amended to consolidate power and allow the president to remain in office beyond his current term, which is set to end in 2030.
Under Article 140 of the 2014 constitution – amended in 2019 to extend the presidential term from four to six years – the president is limited to no more than two consecutive six-year terms.
Al-Sisi warned that unrest similar to that seen in 2011 could have severe consequences for the stability of the state and its long-term viability.
“Protect your country from this conspiracy – I am not saying protect the president,” he said, while calling on everyone to take responsibility for strengthening collective awareness and explaining
the dangers of attempts to overthrow states from within.
