Senegalese military forces deployed in Military Zone No. 5 destroyed seven cannabis fields spanning over one hectare in northern Sindian, located in the Bignona Department of Casamance, on Thursday, September 17, 2026.
Discovered during routine security sweeps approximately eight kilometers northwest of Sindian, the illicit plantations were dismantled as part of an ongoing military counter-narcotics directive targeting illegal economic activities in southern Senegal. Defense forces also apprehended two individuals during the raid, transferring them directly to the Bignona Gendarmerie Brigade for formal processing and investigation.
The successful operation underscores an intensified security posture across the Casamance region, where armed forces and local gendarmerie units routinely execute joint interdiction missions to disrupt trafficking corridors and eliminate production hubs. Following similar coordinated anti-narcotics sweeps conducted across the Ziguinchor sector in late 2025, military commanders confirmed that security forces will maintain active surveillance and targeted operations throughout Bignona Department to dismantle organized criminal networks and restore long-term stability to the area.
