Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye presided over the handover ceremony in Dakar on Thursday for 153 medically equipped ambulances, intended to strengthen emergency care and medical evacuations across the country.
These vehicles were acquired at a cost of 8.1 billion CFA francs with the support of technical and financial partners of the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene, the Presidency stated.
These vehicles supplement the 93 ambulances distributed since June 2024.
They are designed to bolster emergency care, support the rollout of Mobile Emergency and Resuscitation Services (SMUR) in the regions, and facilitate medical evacuations from the most remote areas – particularly for the benefit of women, children, and the elderly.
The Senegalese leader noted that this initiative is part of efforts to upgrade medical infrastructure and equipment – an undertaking for which 275 billion CFA francs have been mobilised to date.
It also aligns with the National Health System Transformation Strategy (2025-2034), a component of the “Senegal 2050” National Transformation Agenda.
Bassirou Diomaye Faye called upon health facility managers, mayors, and departmental council presidents to ensure the proper maintenance and use of the ambulances.
Finally, he expressed the nation’s gratitude to the technical and financial partners who have joined Senegal in its efforts to achieve universal health coverage.
