Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD) will deploy its academic expertise to train specialist doctors from Guinea-Bissau under a national medical specialization initiative backed by the World Bank for the 2025–2030 period.
UCAD Rector Professor Alioune Badara Kandji received his counterpart from Guinea-Bissau’s Amílcar Cabral University, Professor Herculano Arlindo Mendes, along with a high-level delegation including the deans of medicine and law and Guinea-Bissau’s Director-General of Maternal and Child Health, to finalize operational details under an existing inter-university cooperation agreement.
The program directly targets severe shortages of specialized healthcare professionals in Guinea-Bissau, focusing on critical disciplines such as obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics and neonatology, and anesthesiology and intensive care. Professor Kandji proposed establishing a joint working committee comprising representatives from both academic institutions and Guinea-Bissau’s Ministry of Health to structure the academic framework and logistics. During the visit, the Bissau-Guinean delegation inspected UCAD’s Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dentistry alongside its central university library to assess the infrastructure, research equipment, and pedagogical resources dedicated to supporting the forthcoming specialist cohorts.
