Senegal is taking steps to bolster its position as a leading medical destination in West Africa following a proposal to construct a $10 million specialized stem cell therapy center in Dakar.
Presented directly to Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on Sunday in El Alamein by Dr. Hisham Issa, Chief Executive Officer of the Egyptian firm Safe Call Bank, the facility will be entirely privately funded by the company to deliver advanced treatments for degenerative diseases and complex clinical conditions.
The proposed center aims to serve both domestic patients and cross-border cases across the broader West African region, significantly reducing the necessity for costly medical evacuations outside the continent. Beyond expanding specialized treatment offerings, the initiative aligns with Dakar’s overarching strategy to strengthen health sovereignty, attract targeted foreign direct investment, and establish Senegal as a competitive commercial and technological hub in the regional healthcare market.
