Seychelles intervenes on the African Union (AU) Summit theme

During executive discussions on the African Union’s annual theme, “Ensuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to achieve the goals of Agenda 2063,” Seychelles Minister Faure delivered an intervention urging the continental body to fully integrate the blue economy and address the unique vulnerabilities of island and coastal nations.

While commending the African Union Commission for its work on the initiative following the rollout of the Africa Vision and Policy 2063, Minister Faure emphasized that the practical execution of these policies must remain inclusive of all geographic realities across the continent.

Central to the intervention was an urgent call for expanded international financing dedicated to climate-resilient water infrastructure. Minister Faure underscored the intrinsic connection between freshwater management and marine conservation, noting that the responsible stewardship of ocean ecosystems cannot be detached from the management of inland water resources. To showcase practical solutions for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the minister highlighted “Island Watch,” a community-based digital initiative piloted in Seychelles that equips students, researchers, and local citizens with tools to track freshwater ecosystem health and supply data for climate adaptation strategies.

Looking ahead, Minister Faure stressed the essential role of women and youth in shaping sustainable water governance frameworks across Africa. Concluding the address, the minister expressed strong hope that African member states will rally behind a unified strategy at the upcoming UN Water Conference scheduled for December 2026 in the United Arab Emirates.
