Somalia has formally expressed a desire to model aspects of its security governance and counter-terrorism strategies after the Burkinabè experience following an official visit to Ouagadougou by the Somali Minister of Internal Security, General Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail.
During a high-level working session on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, General Ismail held talks with his counterpart, Mahamadou Sana, praising the tangible results Burkina Faso has achieved in integrating security, governance, and national development. The discussions prioritized a new framework for operational cooperation, specifically targeting intelligence sharing, advanced training for security forces, and the implementation of innovative urban security solutions.
The visit highlighted a growing alignment between the two nations as they both struggle against persistent jihadist insurgencies. The Somali delegation indicated that Burkina Faso’s recent security reforms could serve as a blueprint for Somalia’s own ongoing institutional restructuring. To gain a practical understanding of these systems, the delegation toured several key strategic sites, including the National Police Academy, the Video Surveillance Command Center, and the Faso Mêbo Agency. The visit culminated in a meeting with President Ibrahim Traoré, where General Ismail delivered a message from President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, underscoring that African solidarity is the essential prerequisite for overcoming the continent’s intertwined security and development obstacles.
