Algeria is preparing to initiate a new oil exploration campaign in northern Niger, though the operation remains exposed to steep logistical, security, and financial hurdles with no current guarantee of commercial viability.
The National Drilling Company (Enafor), a subsidiary of state energy group Sonatrach, plans to drill the “Kafra South-East 1” exploration well in Niger’s Agadez region, roughly 85 kilometers from the Algerian border. The complex operation involves transporting equipment over 2,000 kilometers from Hassi Messaoud to reach a targeted depth of nearly 4,000 meters.
Although Algerian officials highlight encouraging preliminary data, Sonatrach has yet to release formal estimates regarding commercially recoverable reserves, projected production figures, or overall development costs. Operating in the Sahelian environment poses distinct challenges, including harsh terrain, minimal local infrastructure, and regional security risks that could inflate operational costs and delay timelines. While Enafor points to its past international experience in markets like Oman, the Kafra well marks its initial drilling undertaking of this scale in northern Niger.
Despite these operational risks, both nations view the project as an essential pillar of their bilateral economic strategy, which was formally endorsed during the Algerian-Nigerien Joint Commission session in Niamey. Algeria has similarly expanded its footprint in Niger’s power sector, recently completing a 40-megawatt power plant through a partnership between Sonelgaz International and Nigelec.
However, ambitious cross-border energy initiatives in the region have historically faced slow progress, as evidenced by the still-incomplete Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline intended to link Nigeria, Niger, and Algeria. For the Kafra project to transition from a high-risk exploration venture into a functional production asset, Sonatrach must confirm viable reserves, establish profitability, and resolve the complex logistics of transporting crude out of a remote, landlocked area.
