Emmanuel John Nchimbi has resigned as Vice President of Tanzania after reports that he had fallen out with President Samia Suluhu Hassan, APA can report on Wednesday.
In a public notice issued on Tuesday from the Office of the Vice President in Dodoma, Nchimbi confirmed he had formally submitted his resignation letter to President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
President Hassan said she accepted the resignation of Nchimbi who also quit politics and public service.
The resignation will take effect on September 4, 2026. Nchimbi cited constitutional provisions under Article 50(2)(c) and Article 149(2) of Tanzania’s Constitution as the basis for stepping down.
He said his decision followed a promise he made to President Hassan a year earlier — that he would step aside whenever she felt a change was needed.
Nchimbi thanked the President and the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party for their confidence in him during his tenure. If confirmed, he becomes the first Tanzanian Vice President to voluntarily resign while still serving in office.
The resignation comes less than a year into the administration formed after the disputed 2025 general election, raising questions about internal dynamics within the ruling party.
The 54-year-old shared his brief resignation letter on his Instagram account, saying he wanted to respect the president’s wishes. Sources in his office and the presidency confirmed the move.
Nchimbi said he would retire from public life at the end of next week – less than 10 months after being sworn in and making him the first vice-president to step down in the history of the East African nation.
