Tunisia intends to accelerate the development of renewable energies to strengthen the resilience of its electricity
system, which is facing a sharp increase in demand due to an intense heat wave.
This is according to guidelines reaffirmed by Tunisian authorities and the official press.
Temperatures, which exceeded 40°C in several regions of Tunisia, led to a significant increase in electricity consumption, putting pressure on the grid operated by the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG).
To preserve the stability of the system, targeted load shedding was implemented in certain areas, illustrating the
difficulties encountered during peak consumption periods.
Faced with these strains, the authorities are pursuing a strategy aimed at diversifying the energy mix, reducing dependence on hydrocarbon imports, and strengthening security of supply.
This policy, presented as a priority by President Kais Saied, relies in particular on accelerating investments in the solar and wind energy sectors, as well as improving the regulatory framework designed to attract investors.
Tunisia is also focusing on the development of green hydrogen, considered a strategic sector in the medium and long term.
The authorities intend to leverage the country’s natural resources and geographical proximity to European markets to develop a sector geared towards both domestic needs and exports.
The European Union supports this strategy through technical cooperation programs, financing mechanisms, and capacity-building initiatives, within the framework of cooperation focused on decarbonation and energy security.
The Tunisian authorities present this transition as a lever to strengthen energy sovereignty, support economic competitiveness, and reduce the country’s vulnerability to climate risks and energy market volatility.
