The capital of Burkina Faso has become the focal point of regional diplomacy as ministers from the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) gather to chart the future of their alliance.
Delegations from Mali and Niger arrived at the Ouagadougou airbase on Wednesday afternoon to participate in a high-level summit involving officials in charge of defense, diplomacy, trade, and infrastructure.
The Malian delegation was the first to arrive, led by General Sadio Camara, the Minister of State for Defense and Veterans Affairs. He was received by his Burkinabe counterpart, Major General Celestin Simpore, who is the Minister of State for War and Patriotic Defense. The welcoming committee also included several high-ranking Burkinabe officials, such as Bassolma Bazie of the National Economic and Social Action Commission, Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traore, Trade Minister Serge Gnaniodem Poda, and Deputy Minister Stella Eldine Kabre/Kabore.
Shortly after the arrival of the Malian officials, the combined delegations formed an honor guard to welcome the Nigerien representatives. This group was headed by General Salifou Mody, Niger’s Minister of State and Minister of National Defense. The simultaneous presence of these senior leaders underscores the transition of the AES from a security-focused pact into a broader political and economic confederation.
During the sessions scheduled for Thursday, February 26, 2026, the ministers are expected to review and approve the final conclusions drafted by senior technical officials. These discussions center on the three primary pillars of the Confederation, with a specific focus on finalizing the strategic roadmap for the second year of the AES.
By including portfolios as diverse as trade and infrastructure alongside national defense, the three member states are signaling a definitive move toward deep integration. This meeting serves as a critical step in coordinating cross-border economic policies and shared security protocols, reflecting a collective ambition to establish a more self-reliant and integrated Sahelian region.
