The Malian capital is preparing to reclaim its status as the global epicenter of African visual arts, with the official announcement that the 15th edition of the Bamako Encounters will take place from November 26, 2026, to January 26, 2027.
The news was confirmed following a Council of Ministers meeting held on February 25, 2026, signaling the government’s continued commitment to this landmark cultural event.
Established in 1994, the Bamako Encounters is widely regarded as the most influential international platform dedicated to contemporary African photography and its global diaspora. Over the past three decades, the Biennale has evolved into a vital crossroads for artists, curators, collectors, and researchers, drawing professionals from across Africa, Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
The upcoming edition follows the success of the 14th Biennale, held between late 2024 and early 2025 under the theme “Kuma.” That event featured thirty artists selected from a pool of hundreds of applicants and attracted more than 300 industry professionals and 100 international journalists. By utilizing diverse cultural venues throughout Bamako for exhibitions, workshops, and residencies, the event has consistently fostered a vibrant environment for artistic exchange and professional development.
Beyond its role as an art exhibition, the Biennale serves as a critical springboard for African photographers, many of whom have transitioned from the Bamako stage to international acclaim. The event also remains a cornerstone of Mali’s cultural diplomacy. In the current global climate of media transformation, the 15th edition aims to champion the themes of cultural renaissance and sovereignty, reinforcing Mali’s position as a leader in the global artistic landscape.
