The African Development Bank (AfDB) is considering mobilising about CFAF350 billion ($580 million) to finance strategic projects in Burkina Faso between 2027 and 2029, its country office said on Tuesday.
The funding envelope is part of the forthcoming 2027-2031 Country Strategy Paper (CSP), whose finalisation was discussed at a workshop in Ouagadougou between the AfDB and Burkina Faso’s Ministry of Economy and Finance.
“Between 2027 and 2029, the amounts and projects to be mobilised are in the region of CFAF350 billion,” said Daniel Ndoye, head of the AfDB country office. He added that the Bank hoped to go “even further”.
The future partnership is expected to prioritise industrialisation and resilient infrastructure, particularly in agribusiness, manufacturing, transport and energy.
Burkina Faso aims in particular to increase the local processing of raw materials in order to generate greater added value, employment and income.
The AfDB’s current portfolio in Burkina Faso comprises 19 operations worth about $950 million, according to Ndoye.
The government nevertheless wants to accelerate project implementation. As of the end of July 2026, its portfolio comprised 18 investment projects and one study project, representing about CFAF538 billion in commitments.
The proportion of projects considered problematic fell from 54% at the end of 2022 to 40% in July 2026.
However, the average time between project approval and first disbursement remains more than 20 months, according to the ministry.
The government is therefore calling for greater flexibility and shorter processing times to accelerate project implementation from 2027.
