U.S. payments giant PayPal has announced the expansion of its PYUSD stablecoin to 27 additional African markets, a strategic move aimed at facilitating cross-border payments and remittances while strictly adhering to local regulatory frameworks.
The rollout brings the total number of global markets where PYUSD is available to 70, significantly bolstering PayPal’s operational footprint within Africa’s rapidly expanding digital financial ecosystem. Pegged to the U.S. dollar to maintain a stable value, stablecoins are increasingly utilized for international transactions, particularly in regions where cross-border fees remain elevated and access to foreign currency is often constrained.
PayPal designed PYUSD to provide a simple, transparent digital payment solution for individuals, expatriates, and cross-border enterprises across the continent. Otto Williams, Senior Vice President at PayPal, emphasized that buying or selling PYUSD in U.S. dollars incurs no fees, nor are fees applied to transfers between PayPal and Venmo accounts. Eligible users can purchase, hold, send, and receive PYUSD directly within their PayPal accounts, as well as transfer the digital asset to compatible third-party digital wallets.
Addressing regulatory considerations, the company stressed that the regional expansion will strictly conform to national legal requirements in every jurisdiction. Williams highlighted that compliance remains central to PayPal’s global strategy across nearly 200 markets, ensuring tailored alignment with local standards. Against the backdrop of rapid digital adoption in African payments and financial services, PayPal anticipates that the expanded availability of PYUSD will improve access to international markets, reduce remittance friction, and provide a reliable financial mechanism for consumers and businesses alike.
