African football will be prominently featured at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, with powerhouse clubs Al Ahly (Egypt), Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), Espérance de Tunis (Tunisia), and Wydad Casablanca (Morocco) set to represent the continent.
The expanded tournament will take place in the United States from June 15 to July 13.
This inaugural 32-team edition brings together the world’s top club teams, offering these four iconic African sides a significant opportunity to challenge football giants from Europe, Latin America, and Asia.
Al Ahly SC, African football’s most decorated club, enters the competition with considerable continental experience. The Cairo-based team, a regular on major stages, aims to leverage its pedigree against high-profile opponents such as Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, Palmeiras, and FC Porto.
South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns are returning to the global stage after nine years. Under the guidance of Portuguese tactician Miguel Cardoso, the team will look to showcase its attacking prowess, led by talents like Lucas Ribeiro Costa and Themba Zwane. They are drawn into a challenging group alongside Borussia Dortmund, Fluminense, and Ulsan Hyundai.
Espérance de Tunis, four-time CAF Champions League winners, will proudly represent Tunisia. The “Blood and Gold” have been placed in a tough group with Chelsea, Flamengo, and Club León, and will rely on tactical discipline and the leadership of seasoned players like Youcef Belaïli.
Wydad Casablanca of Morocco heads to the tournament with a 29-man squad, including six new signings. With a strong track record in interclub competitions, the Moroccan side is determined to make a lasting impression against elite opposition.
Backed by their robust performances on the African stage, these four clubs are poised to proudly carry the continent’s flag in this major new global club competition.
