Beginning November 6, news agency APA is launching “Afrique-sur-Seine,” a weekly Friday column authored by Hassan Adrar that examines French current affairs and the impending presidential election by placing Africa, its strategic interests, and its diasporas at the center of the political analysis.
Challenging conventional viewpoints by observing Paris through an African lens, the column addresses how French policy decisions resonate across the continent, how Franco-African relations feature in domestic political discourse, and how African diasporas actively participate in French civic life.
With this new feature, APA aims to scrutinize candidate platforms, evaluate political postures, and analyze the concrete implications of French electoral debates for the African continent, focusing particularly on candidates’ foreign policy priorities toward Africa and the evolving role of diaspora communities. The column’s title pays homage to the seminal 1955 short film Afrique-sur-Seine, shot in Paris by young African filmmakers at a time when cinema production was prohibited in their home countries. More than seven decades later, columnist Hassan Adrar—a Frenchman of African descent—carries forward this legacy, providing sharp, uncompromising commentary from within France alongside in-depth analyses and profiles of prominent diaspora figures shaping the country’s headlines.
