The chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, strongly condemns the attacks claimed by the Houthis against commercial oil tankers in the Red Sea, following their announcement of a naval blockade targeting Saudi Arabia, AU said on Thursday in a statement.
“These actions represent a dangerous escalation with serious implications for regional peace and security” said Youssouf, asserting AU’s solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to safeguard its security, sovereignty, and stability of the kingdom.
The chairperson stressed that attacks against commercial vessels and any attempt to obstruct the free movement of maritime traffic constitute a grave threat to international maritime security and to the stability of one of the world’s most strategic waterways.
“Freedom of navigation and the safety and security of commercial shipping must be fully respected in accordance with international law,” the statement said.
He further underscored that the security of maritime routes in the Red Sea is of vital strategic importance to Africa.
“Any disruption of commercial shipping risks undermining regional maritime connectivity, global supply chains, energy security and the economic interests of numerous African States whose trade depends on safe, secure and uninterrupted access to these sea lanes,” he added.
Youssouf further called upon the Houthis to immediately cease all attacks against commercial shipping, refrain from any action that could further escalate tensions, and fully respect international law governing maritime navigation.
The Chairperson reiterated that the AU would support all regional and international efforts aimed at de-escalating the conflict, preserving maritime security, and advancing a peaceful and negotiated resolution, in the interest of lasting peace, security and stability in the Red Sea region and the wider Middle East.
