Botswana’s Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education has announced emergency preparedness measures in response to a government-issued flood warning affecting the southern region of the country, coinciding with the national final school examinations.
The Ministry of Environment and Tourism recently issued an alert warning of widespread thundershowers and heavy rainfall that could trigger flooding in several southern districts.
The advisory urged heightened vigilance across sectors, citing potential disruptions to infrastructure and public services.
In a statement late Tuesday, Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education spokesperson Potso Thari confirmed that the ministry is on high alert and actively monitoring the situation through its Regional Director (Operations).
“Should the need arise, the ministry, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of learners,” Thari said.
Acknowledging the overlap with final examinations, the ministry assured the public that every effort will be made to minimise academic disruption.
Parents and guardians have been urged to prioritise children’s safety and closely monitor their movements, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
