Lieutenant Colonel Mahamady Sawadogo, commander of the Volunteer Brigade for the Defense of the Homeland (BVDP), has announced a significant transformation of Burkina Faso’s auxiliary forces by transitioning local units into Regional Operational Groups (GORs).
This reform represents a strategic shift designed to move away from static local units in favor of more mobile regional groups capable of executing large-scale offensive operations. By improving coordination and ending the previous dispersal of forces, the reorganization aims to turn citizen engagement into an elite strike force with enhanced technological and logistical resources.
The new framework also introduces major changes to the volunteers’ professional and social standing, including an extension of the commitment period from one year to three years. To support these personnel, an additional bonus of 20,000 FCFA has been established alongside an affiliation with COMIPEC, which will allow volunteers to access loans for their personal and professional projects. This initiative is a core component of the territorial reconquest strategy led by President Captain Ibrahim Traore, positioning the GOR as a primary tool for achieving national sovereignty and security.
