Burkina Faso’s Prosecutor of Faso has launched an official investigation following the death of a suspect in police custody on Tuesday morning.
The individual, identified as 39-year-old Mahamadi Baguian, died during his transfer to judicial police premises in Ouagadougou after reportedly suffering a medical emergency.
According to a statement from Prosecutor Bazie Bakouli Blaise, Baguian had been apprehended on March 31, 2026, in connection with alleged criminal offenses. While being transported, he was rushed to the infirmary of the National Police Academy for emergency treatment but did not survive. His body has since been moved to the Bogodogo University Hospital morgue for forensic examinations to determine the exact cause of death.
The public prosecutor’s office has expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and emphasized its commitment to a transparent investigation “to shed full light” on the circumstances of the incident. Authorities have urged the public to rely on official updates as the legal inquiry unfolds, reaffirming that the process will be conducted in strict accordance with the law.
