Burkina Faso has officially lifted the suspension on exports of cereal flour, including millet, maize, and sorghum flour, ending a restriction that had been in place since February 2022.
The Burkinabe government authorized the resumption of these staple flour exports across the country in a statement issued by the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Handicrafts on July 21, 2026. According to the government, the strategic shift is aimed at supporting local processing units by helping them clear large inventories of stocks that accumulated during the multi-year ban.
In the official statement, Minister Serge Gnaniodem Poda explained that the decision was directly prompted by the need to facilitate the commercial disposal of these heavy inventories held by domestic processing companies. However, authorities emphasized that the resumption of trade will not be entirely unrestricted, as all outgoing shipments remain strictly subject to obtaining a prior Special Export Authorization (ASE) in accordance with active national regulations. The ministry urged all economic operators to rigorously comply with these regulatory requirements, warning that any violations will face swift penalties under existing laws.
