Nominations for presidential candidates in Zambia’s 2026 general elections opened on Monday, marking a key milestone in the run‑up to the 13 August polls.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia said it is fully prepared for the exercise, with accreditation of monitors, observers, media and political party officials already under way.
Access to the nomination centre will be strictly controlled and the process will run until 22 May.
The nominations launch formally sets Zambia on course for elections that will choose a president, members of parliament and local government leaders.
The polls come amid heightened political activity and growing public debate over economic reforms, governance and service delivery.
President Hakainde Hichilema has repeatedly urged political parties to conduct peaceful, issue‑based campaigns, warning against insults, misinformation and divisive use of social media.
He said security agencies are on high alert to safeguard peace before, during and after voting, and reminded citizens that unity and responsible civic engagement are essential for national development.
