Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy has officially drawn the curtain on his international career after eight years between the posts for the Lions of Teranga, the Confederation of African Football confirmed.
The 34-year-old Al-Ahli shot-stopper made the announcement via a video retrospective on his Instagram account with the caption “Thank you, Senegal,” bringing an end to a defining tenure in Senegalese football.
Mendy earned his first cap under former head coach Aliou Cissé in September 2018 and went on to make 59 international appearances. Throughout his international stint, he established an impressive defensive record, conceding 34 goals and registering 31 clean sheets. His international career was anchored by Senegal’s historic triumph at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, where he anchored the squad to a penalty shootout victory over Egypt to secure the country’s maiden continental crown.
In addition to his AFCON title, Mendy represented Senegal on the global stage at two FIFA World Cups, appearing in Qatar in 2022 and across the North American tournament in 2026. His international achievements were matched by individual recognition, including UEFA Best Goalkeeper of the Season and AFCON Best Goalkeeper in 2021, followed by The Best FIFA Goalkeeper award in 2022. Mendy was also named among the ten nominees for the 2026 Yashin Trophy. While he continues his club career in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ahli, Mendy steps aside from the national side having helped define a golden era for the Lions of Teranga.
