The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded Ghana the hosting rights for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
According to the statement published on its official website, CAF stated that the decision coincides with the country’s 70th independence anniversary.
It noted that this edition is “highly symbolic” for Ghana and its rich football heritage and the major role it has played in the development of
African football.
This will be the second time Ghana will be hosting the competition, after the 1999 edition, which Ghana won on home soil in front of their fans.
The U-20 AfCON will bring together 12 teams, showcasing “the continent’s best young talents” in a tournament considered a key stepping stone to the
highest international level.
The four-time African champions in this age group, Ghana has a strong tradition in youth football and has produced several iconic figures.
Among them are Stephen Appiah, Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari and Andre Ayew. Ghana also remains the first African nation to have won the FIFA U-20 World
Cup in 2009, confirming its status as a benchmark in youth player development.
The four semi-finalists of the competition will secure their qualification for the next U-20 World Cup, thus increasing the tournament’s sporting significance.
According to the statement, the last edition, held in Egypt, was won by South Africa and that the dates, host cities and stadiums will be announced later by CAF.
