United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has released his annual report on the Moroccan Sahara, formally recommending that the Security Council extend the mandate of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) for an additional year, until October 31, 2026.
The Secretary-General’s report, published Wednesday on the UN website, reviews recent developments regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue, covering both the on-the-ground reality and international political efforts.
The report also addresses the operational and security aspects of MINURSO’s work, including challenges faced by the mission’s civilian activities in implementing its core mandate.
A significant section of the UN report is devoted to human rights. It highlights Morocco’s efforts to promote and protect human rights within the Moroccan Sahara, while also addressing reported violations of fundamental rights and freedoms within the Tindouf camps in southwestern Algeria.
The Security Council is scheduled to meet at the end of October 2025 to adopt a new resolution on the Moroccan Sahara, which will be formally presented by the United States of America.
