President Hakainde Hichilema has granted clemency to 163 inmates across Zambia’s correctional facilities as part of the country’s 61st Independence Day commemorations on Friday in a gesture the government says reflects national values of forgiveness and unity.
The announcement was made by Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister Jack Mwiimbu who confirmed that 148 men and 15 women were released under the special presidential pardon.
Mwiimbu said the pardons formed part of broader efforts to promote restorative justice and reaffirm Zambia’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and inclusive development.
The 2025 celebrations are being held under the theme “Sustaining Freedom through Unity, Hard Work and Innovation.”
