The Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA) has announced temporary security and traffic management arrangements at Freetown International Airport in Lungi ahead of the upcoming ECOWAS Summit.
The special measures will be in effect from July 17 to July 19, 2026, as the country prepares to host regional delegates and heads of state. While these enhanced protocols will significantly alter terminal access, the authority confirmed that commercial flights will continue to operate exactly as scheduled throughout the period.
Under the new temporary framework, passengers arriving via Sea Coach and Sea Bird services must use a specifically designated access route to reach the airport terminal, adhering strictly to directional signage and security personnel instructions. Meanwhile, travelers making their way to Lungi by ferry or road are required to assemble at the Old Airport Terminal first. From there, dedicated shuttle buses will transport them to the main terminal building via a secured, designated route.
To ensure maximum security during the summit, terminal access is strictly limited to travelers holding valid travel documents and authorized airport personnel. The SLCAA explicitly noted that meeters and greeters will not be permitted inside or around the terminal area during these three days. Furthermore, the authority has adjusted its freight operations, stating that any cargo received on July 17, 18, and 19 will be securely stored at the cargo terminal and will only be released for collection starting July 20, 2026.
Airport management has strongly urged all scheduled airline passengers to plan ahead, allow additional travel time, and cooperate fully with all temporary security and traffic checkpoints. According to the SLCAA, these protocols are vital to ensuring the safe, secure, and seamless movement of international delegates, commercial passengers, and airport staff during the high-profile regional event. Regular airport access operations are expected to resume immediately following the conclusion of the summit.
