Nigerien President Abdourahamane Tiani received Burkinabe Ambassador Abdou Diallo in Niamey on April 7, 2026, to discuss the deepening ties between the two nations and the continued evolution of the Confederation of Sahel States.
During the audience, Ambassador Diallo delivered a message from Captain Ibrahim Traoré, highlighting the shared commitment of both leaders to maintain rigorous coordination amidst the region’s persistent security challenges. The discussions emphasized the “very strong” fraternal and cooperative relations that have characterized the partnership since the National Committee for the Safeguarding of the Homeland took power in Niger.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the consolidation of the Confederation of Sahel States, which serves as a strategic cooperation framework between Niamey, Ouagadougou, and Bamako. Ambassador Diallo noted that he received specific instructions from President Tiani to further strengthen the bonds of fraternity during his diplomatic mission. The meeting also included high-ranking Nigerien officials, such as the Minister and Chief of Staff to the President and the advisor for strategic and diplomatic affairs, underscoring the high-level importance of this bilateral exchange.
The ongoing collaboration is rooted in the Alliance of Sahel States, established in September 2023 through the Liptako-Gourma Charter to ensure mutual defense and sovereignty. Since its transition into a Confederation in July 2024, the alliance has expanded beyond its initial military focus to include integrated political, economic, and diplomatic cooperation. This includes the implementation of joint military coordination mechanisms and the adoption of unified international positions, marking a firm departure from ECOWAS following the official exit of the three member states in January 2025.
