The Burkinabe and Beninese armies have launched joint patrols in the border area of Koualou, marking a new step in strengthening their security cooperation in the face of threats from armed groups.
A convoy of the Burkina Faso Combat Forces was spotted in the border town of Koualou, according to a video broadcast by the Beninese media outlet Le Potentiel and relayed by the online news outlet Burkina Yawana.
The footage shows Burkinabe military vehicles moving through the area, greeted by Beninese soldiers, in what is presented as the start of joint patrols between the forces of the two countries.
This initiative comes a few weeks after the friendly working visit of Beninese President Romuald Wadagni to Ouagadougou on June 2, 2026.
Following his discussions with the President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the two heads of state reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening military cooperation, intelligence sharing, and coordinated actions against armed groups operating in border areas.
Located on the border between Burkina Faso and Benin, the Koualou area is considered a strategic corridor in the fight against cross-border insecurity.
The joint patrols aim to improve operational coordination between the two armies and strengthen security along the main routes linking northern Benin to eastern Burkina Faso.
