Niger convened a roundtable in Niamey on Tuesday, bringing together public actors, development partners, civil society and traditional and religious authorities to discuss strengthening social cohesion and consolidating peace.
Organised under the auspices of the Ministry of the Interior, Public Security and Territorial Administration, the meeting is part of the implementation of the 2025-2029 Programme for the Rebuilding of the Republic (PRR), presented as a framework for the country’s public
policies.
According to the organisers, the roundtable aims to foster a more comprehensive approach to the challenges facing Niger, including insecurity, population displacement, and socio-economic vulnerabilities.
This approach integrates social justice, reconciliation, and development into the security response, with the goal of sustainably strengthening peace and stability.
The participants are examining, in particular, the possibility of strengthening coordination among the various actors involved in social cohesion.
The meeting is also expected to contribute to resource mobilisation through the creation of a multi-partner common fund under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
This mechanism aims to improve the coherence of interventions and prevent the dispersion of efforts and resources.
The governance and monitoring of social cohesion projects are also among the priorities, with a stated emphasis on effectiveness, transparency, and accountability.
The strategy presented at the meeting also intends to leverage traditional mechanisms of social regulation, including community solidarity, joking relationships and customary mediation.
Through this approach, the Nigerien authorities hope to translate security gains into concrete benefits for the population in terms of peace and development.
The round table should therefore promote a partnership between the State, technical and financial partners, civil society and traditional and religious authorities, based on shared responsibility and monitoring of results.
