The Transitional President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, received in audience on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in Ouagadougou, a Nigerien delegation led by the Minister of Energy, Professor Haoua Amadou.
The delegation from the President of the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP), General Abdourahamane Tiani, discussed the proposal for a partnership around the Salkadamna coal complex project in Niger, as part of the construction of energy security within the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
“We had the honour of discussing with the President of Burkina Faso a key project for our countries: The Salkadamna coal complex,” the Nigerien minister said after the meeting.
She said that the initiative was part of a dynamic of strengthened cooperation between the members of the Sahel Economic Cooperation Agency (AES).
According to the minister, the project aims to lay the foundations for sustainable energy autonomy for the Confederation of Sahel States, while ensuring better use of the region’s natural resources.
“On the instructions of General Abdourahamane Tiani, we have requested Burkina Faso’s support so that this project can take on a regional dimension. This is not a project for a single country, but for the entire Sahel,” she added.
This approach is part of a shared desire among the AES countries (Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger) t
o pool their efforts in strategic areas, particularly energy, security and infrastructure.
The Salkadamna project could thus constitute a key step towards collective energy independence in the heart of the Sahel.
