Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has expressed sadness over the tragic incident at a children’s funfair on Wednesday in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo state in southwestern Nigeria which claimed the lives of about 35 children.
In a statement issued on Thursday by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the Nigerian President on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu expressed his condolences to the government and people of Oyo State and, most importantly, the grieving families over the unfortunate event.
“This is a deeply painful moment for the entire nation. I extend my heartfelt sympathies to the families enduring this unimaginable loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as we mourn this tragic occurrence together.
“We must uncover the truth behind this tragedy. It is imperative to determine whether negligence or deliberate actions were involved, ensuring a transparent and accountable process,” the statement said.
According to President Tinubu, this heartbreaking event underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive review of safety protocols at all public gatherings.
He advocated regular safety audits and strict enforcement of safety regulations and standard practice to prevent such tragedies in the future.
“Our children’s safety and well-being remain paramount. No event should ever compromise their safety or take precedence over their lives.
“May the Almighty comfort the grieving families and bring healing to the injured,” the statement added.
He, however, ordered for an investigation into the cause of the stampede that resulted in the loss of lives of the children.
