Niger’s transitional president, General Abdourahamane Tiani, officially opened the 2026–2027 judicial year in Niamey on Thursday, October 22, 2026, delivering a firm call for a proactive legal system dedicated to safeguarding national sovereignty and public resources.
Gathered under the theme “The Role of Justice in Affirming National Sovereignty” at the Mahatma Gandhi International Conference Centre, the ceremony brought together Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine, members of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), senior government officials, and diplomatic delegations from fellow Confederation of Sahel States (AES) members Burkina Faso and Mali.
In his opening address, General Tiani framed the administration of justice as a core instrument of state sovereignty, outlining strategic directives across domestic, economic, and international legal domains. The head of state urged magistrates and legal practitioners to deploy “legal ingenuity” when representing the nation in international litigation, securing the recovery of court-awarded state compensation, and asserting sovereign rights under the United Nations Charter. Reaffirming the transition government’s commitment to expanding judicial infrastructure and technical resources despite economic constraints, General Tiani called on the judiciary to reject insular interest groups and align its practice with the country’s national “Refoundation” agenda.
