President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday extended warm wishes to South Africa’s Jewish community celebrating the occasion of Passover this weekend.
In his message, Ramaphosa highlighted the significance of the festival and its role in uniting families and friends through the traditional seder feast.
“I wish Jewish South Africans a happy and meaningful Passover, with the feast of seder uniting family and friends,” he said.
He said the celebration is a widely respected tradition in South Africa, where we are blessed with a diversity of faith and culture that reflects our common humanity.”
Passover, or Pesach, is one of the most important Jewish holidays, commemorating the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt.
The festival is marked by rituals, prayers and the sharing of symbolic foods during the seder, which serves as a reminder of resilience and freedom.
Ramaphosa noted the broader message of Passover, urging South Africans to draw inspiration from the occasion to strive for a society free from division, intolerance, conflict and inequality.
South Africa’s Jewish community has long been an integral part of the nation’s cultural tapestry, contributing to its rich diversity and shared values.
