The son of Libya’s slain veteran leader Muammar Gaddafi has been reported killed in an unexplained incident near the country’s border with Algeria on Tuesday.
The Libyan News Agency said Saif al-Islam Gaddafi’s death was revealed by members of his political entourage.
Libyan TV also quoted his sister as saying he had been killed but stopped short of revealing the circumstances of his death.
However, some local media reports suggest that he was attacked in his residence by armed men.
Saif 53, was once seen as a successor to his father Muammar who ruled Libya for 42 years before he was ousted and killed in an armed uprising in 2011.
He was regarded as an influential personality in Libya even after his father’s death but was jailed by militiamen in Zintan over his role in violently suppressing protesters during the uprising for which the International Criminal Court had requested to try him on crimes against humanity charges.
