The Senegalese government is stepping up efforts to modernise the justice system and improve prison conditions.
Justice Minister and Keeper of the Seals Moussa Sarr announced that the prime minister had authorised the recruitment of 418 prison staff.
The announcement was made at Thursday’s opening of a regional conference focusing on the social reintegration of prisoners and support after release.
The prison recruitment intake comprises 400 prison officers, 10 administrative staff, six inspectors and two senior inspectors.
The additional personnel are intended to ease the workload of existing staff while balancing security requirements in correctional facilities with efforts to prepare inmates for rehabilitation.
Separately, the recruitment of 28 coordinators for the Houses of Justice forms part of efforts to bring local justice services closer to citizens and reduce the burden on the courts.
According to the justice minister, strengthening human resources is a cornerstone of a modern justice policy that balances supervision, conflict prevention and social reintegration.
