South Korean group DONEWON, a major player in tuna processing and canning, aims to establish Senegal as a strategic hub for seafood exports to North American and European markets.
A delegation from DONEWON, led by Vice President Myoung Lee, was received on Monday at the Presidential Palace by President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye.
“We had very constructive talks with President Diomaye Faye and commend the government’s commitment to supporting our project,” Lee told national broadcaster RTS.
Already operating in Senegal, the company currently exports locally processed products to the United States. It now plans to scale up its investments to turn Senegal into a regional industrial hub for fish processing and exports—fully aligned with the Vision Senegal 2050 roadmap and the country’s national food sovereignty strategy.
“Our ambition is clear: to process locally, add value to Senegal’s fisheries resources, and make the ‘Made in Senegal’ label shine in global markets,” Lee added.
The initiative aligns with the Senegalese government’s drive to attract high-value investors in the fisheries sector, which is seen as a key lever for inclusive growth, job creation, and revitalisation of coastal regions.
According to government sources, a technical consultation framework is expected to be launched in the coming weeks to support the project’s rollout.
Authorities stress the importance of integrating the investment into local value chains and ensuring full compliance with environmental and social standards.
