Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has met in Dakar with the African Union’s envoy for the Sahel, Mamadou Tangara.
Their talks came against the backdrop of renewed diplomatic exchanges in West Africa.
Tangara is the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission for Mali and the Sahel.
The talks focused on the security and political situation in the Sahel region, as well as ongoing initiatives in support of stability, peace and the strengthening of regional cooperation, the Senegalese presidency revealed.
The meeting comes in a context marked by several diplomatic initiatives across the West African subregion aimed at reviving dialogue between ECOWAS and the AES.
In Lomé, informal consultations held on the sidelines of the Togo-Sahel 2026-2028 Strategy brought together, in April, officials from AES member states and ECOWAS officials to discuss prospects for security and economic cooperation — notably transport corridors and regional coordination mechanisms.
The Senegalese authorities have indicated their position in favour of strengthening regional integration and maintaining dialogue with subregional states, in a context of recallibrating ECOWAS institutions.
The authorities in Cotonou also reaffirmed on Sunday their commitment to enhanced regional cooperation — particularly in the security situation — at the inauguration of the new Beninese president, attended by delegations from Sahelian countries.
All of these initiatives form part of a broader series of diplomatic offensives aimed at strengthening cooperation among states in the region, despite the institutional divergences that persist between the various regional organisations.
