Ghana and Senegal have successfully secured their places in the quarter-finals of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations following victories in their respective Group C matches on Thursday at the Suez Canal Stadium.
Ghana’s Black Satellites clinched the top spot in Group C with a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Central African Republic. Despite a tight contest, substitute Joseph Opoku broke the deadlock late in the 84th minute to secure a valuable victory for the West African nation.
Meanwhile, defending champions Senegal, the Young Teranga Lions, recovered from a shaky start to the tournament with a 2-0 victory over DR Congo. Cheikh Thiam opened the scoring in the 11th minute, and Ibrahima Dieng sealed the win with a penalty in the 81st minute.
Ghana finished the group stage unbeaten with 7 points, topping the group for the first time since 2013. Senegal, finishing second due to a superior head-to-head record against DR Congo, also advanced to the quarter-finals. DR Congo, despite also accumulating 4 points, were eliminated. Both Ghana and Senegal will now proceed to the knockout stage of the competition.
