Zambian authorities have placed Muchinga province on alert following a suspected anthrax outbreak that has killed about 40 animals in Mpika, Lavushimanda and Shiwang’andu districts. Eleven people are also suspected to have been affected.
National Disaster Risk Management Division spokesperson Mathews Musukwa said government teams have begun assessments to establish the extent of the outbreak and are considering measures to contain the situation.
He added that the National Disaster Technical Committee of Permanent Secretaries met on September 8 to review reports and make recommendations.
Anthrax is a serious bacterial disease that primarily affects livestock but can also infect humans through contact with contaminated animal products.
In humans, exposure can occur via skin lesions, inhalation, or ingestion, and the disease can be fatal if untreated. Outbreaks are often linked to the consumption of infected meat or exposure to spores in soil.
Musukwa advised members of the public to avoid contact with blood, tissues or other materials from suspected infected animals.
The government has urged vigilance as investigations continue.
