President Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso on Tuesday received a special envoy from Angolan President João Lourenço, the current Chairperson of the African Union (AU).
Antonio Tete, the special envoy, stated that he was “bearing a message” from the Angolan Head of State during his meeting with the Burkinabe President on June 17. Tete described his mission as “a listening mission, a briefing mission to the authorities of Burkina Faso” aimed at understanding the situation within the country and across the Sahel region.
Mr. Tete further elaborated that he came “to listen to the President of Burkina Faso on the challenges currently facing the entire region and the country and to see what collective paths we can take as Africans to find solutions to the challenges facing each region of our continent.” Given the security situation in the Sahel, the Angolan diplomat emphasized, “it is only natural that the African Union’s principle of non-indifference should guide us to take an interest in what is happening throughout Africa.”
Following discussions with President Traore on the national situation, the Special Envoy expressed his appreciation and affirmed that they had examined “ways and means to continually strengthen the bridge between Africans” and reinforce the spirit of African solidarity and a shared destiny.
