The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has condemned the terrorist attack that left at least 162 civilians dead in the village of Woro, in Kwara State of Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Youssouf described the attack as “heinous and barbaric act.”
Mohammed Omar Bio, a member of Parliament representing the Kwara State, told journalists that the attacks were carried out by the Lakurawa, an armed group affiliated with the Islamic State group. No one has so far claimed responsibility for the attacks.
He reaffirmed the African Union’s unwavering policy of zero tolerance for terrorism and violent extremism in all their forms and manifestations.
The chairperson extends his sincere condolences to the bereaved families and relatives of the victims, as well as to the brotherly people of Nigeria.
He also expressed the African Union’s full solidarity with the Government of Nigeria and the authorities of Kwara State during this difficult time.
The pan-African bloc expressed its steadfast commitment to supporting the people and Government of Nigeria in their efforts to consolidate peace, security, and stability throughout the country.
Armed extremists killed 162 people during attacks on two villages in western Nigeria. It is one of the deadliest assaults in recent months.
