The Gambian capital Banjul has been picked to host the 17th General Assembly of the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB), according to a statement to APA on Wednesday.
The meeting which will coincide with the AUB’s 20th anniversary, is scheduled for April 14 to 17, 2026, under the theme: “AUB, 20 Years Serving African Media: Heritage, Innovation and Transformation,”.
According to the AUB, the theme will facilitate a strategic reflection on the present and future of the continent’s media ecosystem.
AUB members exist against the backdrop of rapid technological transformations, new consumption patterns, and growing challenges for public and private service media.
Given this challenge, the AUB said it is imperative to promote a space for dialogue that values the heritage of African broadcasters, stimulates innovation, and strengthens the institutional transformation necessary to meet the demands of the 21st century.
”This high-level meeting will bring together media executives, representatives from the broadcast industry, government authorities, sports confederations, experts, academics, content creators from across the continent and beyond, as well as representatives from sister unions, partners and other strategic stakeholders” the statement said.
The Banjul meeting is expected to provide an opportunity to conduct an in depth assessment of major issues shaping the future of African broadcasting. Through the course of the meeting, there will be a review of the AUB after 20 year, the challenge of exorbitant cost of sports rights, identifying new sources of funding for African media outlets, and examining innovation and technological transformation in the African media.
The statement quoted Grégoire Ndjaka, AUB Director General as indicating that there will be a media award gala segment to celebrate will celebrate the excellence and creativity of audiovisual professionals. The gala is being fashioned as a fundraiser to support the AUB Foundation Against Cancer (AFAC), a platform dedicated to fighting the disease through media.
With 85 members, the African Union of Broadcasting is the largest broadcasting media organisation in Africa, bringing together public and private broadcasters from Africa and beyond.
It has been promoting authentic African content using its distribution platform, AUBVision, and its entire digital network.
