The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has awarded Beijing the hosting rights for the next three editions of the FIBA Intercontinental Cup. Rwandan club RSSB Tigers, champions of the 2026 Basketball Africa League (BAL), will represent Africa at the next edition, scheduled for September.
The Chinese capital will host the 2026, 2027 and 2028 editions of the FIBA Intercontinental Cup, FIBA has announced.
Beijing succeeds Singapore, which hosted the competition from 2023 to 2025.
According to the Basketball Africa League (BAL), the annual competition brings together the champions from the major continental competitions affiliated with FIBA.
Africa will be represented by RSSB Tigers, the Rwandan club crowned champions of the 2026 BAL.
The Rwandans join the teams already qualified, namely Rytas Vilnius (Lithuania), winners of the Basketball Champions League Europe, and Boca Juniors (Argentina), champions of
the Basketball Champions League Americas.
The BAL notes that several African clubs have already participated in the global competition, including Zamalek (Egypt), US Monastir (Tunisia), Al Ahly SC (Egypt), Petro de Luanda (Angola), and Alahli Tripoli (Libya). The latter secured Africa’s first podium finish by defeating the Brazilian club Flamengo in the third-place game for 2025.
FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis stated that the Intercontinental Cup, created in 1965, has become a “truly global” tournament over the years.
He added that Beijing should contribute to its development over the next three seasons.
The next edition of the FIBA Intercontinental Cup will take place in Beijing, China, at the
end of September 2026, with the participation of the best champion clubs from different regions of the world.
