Burkina Faso has successfully completed the pilot phase of a mobile biometric registration system in Bamako, designed for the issuance of identity and travel documents to its nationals living in Mali.
This milestone marks a major step forward in the modernization of consular services for the Burkinabe diaspora. Burkinabe Security Minister Mahamadou Sana presided over the closing ceremony for this initial phase, celebrating the successful biometric enrollment of Burkinabe citizens residing in the neighboring country.
Conducted using next-generation mobile kits, the localized operation enabled efficient biometric registration and the subsequent issuance of the Alliance of Sahel States biometric identity card (CIB-AES) as well as the AES passport. The new system boasts significantly reduced processing times due to the near real-time transmission of collected data directly to centralized production centers located back in Burkina Faso. Minister Sana emphasized that his presence in Bamako reflects the profound importance that the highest authorities of the country attach to modernizing public services, protecting Burkinabe identity, and continuously improving the administration offered to compatriots living abroad, declaring the pilot phase fully conclusive.
According to the Ministry of Security, this technological advancement represents a major milestone in the overarching modernization of the national identification system. The success of the Bamako trial is expected to pave the way for a gradual, global deployment of these mobile kits across Burkinabe embassies, diplomatic missions, and consular posts worldwide. In the long term, the system will also incorporate the issuance of secure and standardized consular cards, thereby permanently strengthening access for Burkinabe nationals abroad to vital administrative services from their home country.
