Burkina Faso recorded a noticeable reduction in road traffic accidents, injuries, and fatalities during August and September 2026, marking the lowest monthly totals of the year according to official data released Monday by the Ministry of Security.
September saw 1,450 reported road traffic accidents resulting in 1,055 injuries and 69 fatalities, reflecting a steady decline from August, which recorded 1,516 accidents, 1,347 injuries, and 79 deaths. Over the first nine months of 2026, the country registered a cumulative total of 15,853 accidents, 12,858 injuries, and 910 fatalities.
Ministry officials attributed the downward trend to targeted public awareness campaigns, intensified enforcement of mandatory helmet laws, and the deployment of automated traffic enforcement technology nationwide. Security Minister Mahamadou Sana commended road users for their increasing compliance with traffic regulations and urged drivers and motorcyclists to remain vigilant, emphasizing that sustained caution and protective gear remain essential to preserving lives on the national road network.
