Following a devastating fire at the Bigtogo site for Internally Displaced Persons (IDP), the Burkinabe government has launched an urgent relief operation to support the affected families.
Commander Passowendé Pélagie Kabré, the Minister of Humanitarian Action and National Solidarity, visited the site on Saturday, January 10, 2026, to assess the damage and offer state condolences. The blaze, which broke out on the night of January 9, resulted in the tragic death of a two-year-old child and left 336 people from 75 households without shelter.
Accompanied by the Governor of the Kadiogo region, Abdoulaye Bassinga, the Minister paid her respects at the grave of the young victim and met with families who lost their homes and belongings. Initial reports suggest the fire was caused by an accident involving domestic gas use. The Bigtogo site has been a place of refuge since May 2022 for people fleeing conflict in northern regions such as Pobé Mengao and Namissigian. During her visit, Commander Kabré praised the bravery of the host community and other displaced residents who worked together to prevent the flames from consuming the entire settlement.
In immediate response to the crisis, the National Emergency Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (CONASUR) has deployed a month-long emergency aid package. This assistance includes four tons of grain, essential household items, and hygiene kits, along with sleeping mats, blankets, and mosquito nets. The Burkina Faso Red Cross has also stepped in, providing 100 sets of household supplies and 100 lightweight shelter kits, which are being installed today to provide immediate cover for those displaced by the fire.
The Minister reaffirmed the transitional government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable populations and ensuring that displaced citizens receive the necessary support to rebuild. She concluded her visit by urging all residents of displacement sites to adhere strictly to fire safety regulations, emphasizing that while the state will provide relief, collective vigilance is essential to prevent future tragedies.
