The Burkinabe government has significantly reduced the number of roadside checkpoints across the country in an effort to improve traffic flow and combat harassment.
According to the Ministry of Security, the number of checkpoints has been cut from 385 to just 40 on 15 main roads.
Any checkpoint found operating outside of this new framework will be considered illegal. The authorized checkpoints, which can be adjusted monthly based on security needs, will be operational from September 15 to October 14, 2025.
The Ministry of Security has defined two types of checkpoints: document checks, which verify administrative paperwork, and security checks, which involve searching vehicles to prevent threats to national security. Any checkpoint operating outside of this new framework will be considered illegal.
These measures are designed to strike a balance between allowing the free movement of people and goods and ensuring public safety.
