A Canadian mining company is awaiting a gold mining permit for a project located in southern Mali.
The authorities’ decision is expected by the end of the first quarter of 2026.
According to information published in the mining industry press, Compass Gold Corp has initiated the process of obtaining a small-scale mining permit for its Massala gold project.
The site is located in southern Mali, an area historically active in gold production.
Compass Gold has been conducting exploration activities in Mali for several years through its local subsidiary. Work carried out at the Massala site has included drilling, sampling, and geological analysis campaigns aimed at confirming the site’s gold potential.
The results obtained led the company to submit an application to proceed to the mining stage.
According to information obtained by APA, the company hopes for an administrative decision by the end of March 2026, subject to the completion of procedures stipulated by current mining regulations.
The project is classified as a small-scale operation, distinct from the large industrial complexes operating in the country.
Gold remains Mali’s primary export, representing a major share of its foreign exchange earnings. The country is among the leading African producers, with annual industrial production regularly exceeding 70 tons, in addition to artisanal production estimated at several tons per year.
In recent years, Malian authorities have undertaken a review of the mining framework to more strictly regulate the granting of permits, increase local economic benefits, and strengthen state participation in extractive projects.
Any new authorisation remains conditional upon compliance with the environmental, fiscal, and social requirements stipulated by current legislation.
At this stage, the company has not disclosed any investment amount or start-up schedule. The possible granting of the permit would nevertheless constitute a new step in the ongoing gold exploration dynamic in southern Mali, a region accounting for a significant share of the country’s mining projects.
