Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno has signed a series of decrees officially creating three new public universities and a specialised higher institute, marking a significant step forward in the expansion of the country’s higher education system.
The newly established universities will be located in Bongor (southwest), Faya-Largeau (far north), and Bol (west).
These institutions will offer general academic programs designed to meet both academic and vocational training needs across a range of disciplines.
In addition, a new higher institute will be set up in Massakory, in central Chad, with a dedicated focus on health sciences and technology—considered a strategic sector for national development and improved healthcare coverage.
The initiative is part of the president’s five-year development plan, which prioritises equitable access to quality higher education across the country.
It also aims to reduce overcrowding in the country’s major universities—particularly those in N’Djamena, Abéché, and Moundou—and to bring academic opportunities closer to underserved and remote regions.
With these additions, Chad now has a total of seven public universities, not including specialized institutes.
The government hopes this expansion will boost national training capacity, support the emergence of local expertise, and promote territorial inclusion in the field of education.
The success of these institutions will rely on strengthened partnerships with local authorities, international organisations, and research stakeholders to ensure sustainable development and long-term impact.
